Coming Soon: The Smartwatch That Never Needs Charging

Swiss watchmaker Swatch is developing a new smartwatch that you’ll never, ever have to plug into a charger.

Company CEO Nick Hayek told Bloomberg the new watches will never requiring charging and will be compatible with both Windows and Android software. The watches will communicate using Near field communication (NFC) technology, though it isn’t known exactly where they’ll draw their power from.

Watchmakers are slowly embracing smartwatch technology as more and more consumers trade their traditional timepieces for smartwatches. The Pebble Smartwatch exploded in popularity in 2013, raising more than $10 million on Kickstarter. Financial analysts predict the smartwatch market will reach about $10 billion by 2018.

While there is no specific release date for Swatch’s new smartwatch, it will likely compete against Apple’s upcoming smartwatch, set for an April 2015 release.
