It’s Finally Here! The Adult Ball Pit For Work And Play

Pearlfisher Gallery on the west side of London, England, has opened a ball pit for adults.

The pit, coined JUMP IN!, is full of 81,000 crisp-white balls – as opposed to the traditional multi-colored balls found in child-oriented ball pits – and is intended to create “a highly immersive experience promoting a sense of togetherness and joy.”

Creative agency Pearlfisher, responsible for the adult pit, is not only offering free used of the pit to the adult public, it has promised to donate 1 British pound ($1.50 U.S.) to charity Right to Play for every person who visits.

The Independent’s Christopher Hooton explains, “Because being an adult is rubbish and all anyone really wants to do is thrash around in a soft play area, a bunch of heroes have opened a pop-up ball pit in Hammersmith.”

Turns out that Hooton’s heroes had a bit more method behind their innovative-adult-ball-pit madness than appears at first glance. According to Jack Hart, Senior Creative Strategist at Pearlfisher London, their adult ball pit actually builds upon recent studies indicating that more “play” is needed in the adult world – particularly in workplaces.

“Many studies have shown that play can bring about extraordinary results for creative thinking, efficient working, the building of better connections and positive human relationships,” writes Hart adding that:

“Many businesses claim to be ‘creative’ but they continue to operate with restricted process and conditioned thinking – true freedom of thought, expression and behavior never getting a chance to materialize. Integrating play into the working week is the key to the most effective productivity.”

Hart cites Jane Mcgonigal’s 2010 TED talk which discusses how play encourages human attributes of “optimism, trust, collaboration and more efficient problem solving,” and notes various games and activities designed for adult workplaces that prove “how play is becoming an increasingly integral part of our future work culture”

It is “in the spirit of play” and in consideration of “the future of work” that Pearlfisher invites the public to JUMP IN!

Interested adults in the area can email jumpin@pearlfisher.com to book a time in the pit. Hooton suggests “taking your kid along and making them sit at the edge,” but whatever makes visitors the most comfortable is most encouraged.
