World’s SMALLEST egg has been laid – and it’s smaller than a 5p piece

It’s no yolk – there is a new record for the world’s smallest chicken egg after a hen laid one smaller than a 5p coin.

Georgia Crouchman, 22, was collecting eggs from her 20 chickens when she spotted the miniscule egg.

The shell-shocked animal lover carefully took the tiny egg inside and shone a light through it to confirm it was indeed the real thing.

Georgia, a brewer from Bury St Edmunds, in Suffolk, measured the teeny egg at just 1.55cm tall – making it the tiniest ever.

It beats one crowned the smallest last year, which was 1.8cm high

Surprised Georgia said: “I’m not really sure what to do with it.

“I’ve got it in a little washing up container, the little tub you put in the machine, to keep it safe. I guess I could make a very small fried egg.”

Georgia, who lives with her parents on a small holding, found the egg on the floor of the coop on Friday, so isn’t sure which hen laid it.

In 2011, an American farmer claimed his hen laid the world’s smallest chicken egg, measuring just 2.1 centimetres in length.

But that was beaten in 2014 by an egg one millimetre smaller in size, laid in Somerset by a hen called Muffin.

Then a perfectly-formed egg found by Shannon Hayes, 12, from Capel Iwan, Carmarthenshire, last year took the record at just 1.8 centimetres in length.

But now Georgia’s is two-and-a-half millimetres smaller.
